My name is Davis Wilson. My personal interests/hobbies are typically found online rather than in the material world. These interests are in reading manga, watching anime, gaming, and reading light novels, which is a recent hobby I have started partake in. To be more precise, all three aforementioned categories that I read/watch originate from Japan and I read translations for them. I typically read and watch series that are either fantasy adventures or slice of life comedies. They are both an escape from the everyday flow of life and an interesting way to pass time.
Whenever I read or watch something super interesting, I can't help but be in awe of some of the odd/interesting ideas people had. Though many stories tend to converge with similar plots or ploys to attract readers. I find true joy in finding one with a story that is more unique and interesting. This is especially true if the manga or light novel I'm reading is not yet mainstream, since I get a small sense of joy for knowing I found something awesome to read before most others did. Although, this sadly doesn't apply to anime, since anime are typically produced because their original format story has sold well and there are websites that completely track the release of anime.
To put what I've said bluntly, I enjoy both the hunt and capture of my prey, with my prey being a great story.
I am an avid reader of Manga, which is a form of Japanese comics. The Japanese comic industry is a large industry with a wide variety of genres. I would say that there is at least a few manga for every genre you could think of, no matter how obscure. Because of this, this allows for many different people with varying interests and tastes to find stories that they can come to love.
In the two images provided above and below, you can see examples of two series within the fantasy genre that I enjoy reading. The above image is from the widely popular manga, One Piece. It has a wide spread audience and is quite mainstream. The below image is from a lesser known manga which made me happy to come across. Both of these possess pretty unique stories. I am always on the look out for interesting stories like these two.
In actuality, manga holds a key position within my heart/life. It was what helped to start it all. Manga lead me to watching anime and eventually starting to read the light novels I love. If not for manga, I don't know how I would have ended up as of right this moment. However, there is one thing I can say for certain; before I started reading manga, I felt a void/emptiness within myself that left me somewhat disinterested with the world. However, manga helped me to fill the void with a sense of enjoyment.
I enjoy watching anime, which are animated shows from Japan. Anime is commonly pulled from popular manga and/or light novels. A lot of anime are pulled from other works, not because the anime industry is lacking in creativity, but because they can pull in existing markets of customers/viewers. Due to this, most of the anime produced is well structured with thoroughly structured and interesting stories. Although I say that, the fact is that people, like myself, still flock to their own personally preferences.
In the above images, you can see some anime stories I have found interesting On the left are two slice of life stories that are beautifully crafted. Meanwhile, on the right has some fantasy adventure stories that are both heart pounding and fun to watch. All four of these are great stories that I loved to watch. Their comedic acts and surprise twists kept me enthralled. Two of these four anime even lead me to tear up.
Among the countless anime that are released each season, I pick out the few that catch my eye. When I do, I always hope that they will turn out to be on the same level as the above anime. Though this seldom happens, I enjoy the anxious hunt to find such ones.
The last of my interests/hobbies are Japanese light novels. I only recently came to take an interest within, but I still am quite smitten them. Currently, I am only reading three light novels, soon to be four. All of the ones I am currently reading, and are currently planning to, are fantasy adventures. The two main themes they possess are either being reincarnated to another world or being summoned there.
The above image is from a story revolving around being reincarnated into another world and is a light-hearted story about becoming a slime monster and his rise to power in the world. On the other hand, the below image is from a story about being summoned to another world while within the last moments of an online game before it was taken down.
Contrary to the above image, the below image has a story which occasionally is quite a bit darker in content, some times so much that it is painful to read. These conflicting sides of a similar spectrum provide a breath of variety to stories from the same genre. Because of this exceeding amount of difference, I find enjoyment in reading the varied styles they, and others like these, present me with.
My interest in gaming can be viewed as quite deep. I spend a large amount of time especially on two games. However, neither of these games are console games. One game is a MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) and the other is a phone game. However, they both have a common factor they share, which is that they are fantasy adventure genre games. My love for one is a deep relationship that has stemmed from years of playing, which has caused me to grow a deep sense of care for the virtual world as I saw it grow and change. While on the other hand, the second game I only recently started playing, but have found myself deeply drawn towards it and have found myself loving it equally to the game I've known for a longer time.
The above image is an old image that my long time loved game, Runescape, had once used. My love for Runescape went for years before I took a break and returned later on. I've spent countless hours playing this game throughout my life. The only reason I left was because I didn't like the direction the game seemed to be taking at the time, which seemed to be over once I returned.
The below image is a phone app game. It is a currently small game which is based off of the next light novel I plan to start reading next/a manga I am currently reading. The game takes all the characters/species from the original story and allows you to defeat and possibly collect them for your team as allies. The primary reason I am so drawn to this game is that I find myself in awe of how cute almost all the obtainable people/creatures are. I also found it interesting how this game chose to draw in customers by going for a adorable appeal instead of a cool/scary graphic appeal, which most fighting games tend to go for. Because of its uniqueness, my affection for this game grew quite fast and steadily. It may even one day surpass my love for the aforementioned MMORPG, Runescape, once this phone game works out the kinks within itself.
